Understanding Place Value

How do you figure out the place value of digits in a number?

First, remember this:

• In a four-digit number, the first digit is always in the thousands place, the second digit is the hundreds place , the third digit is the tens place , and the last digit is in the ones place.

Example: In the number 1,532, 1 is in the thousands place, 5 is in the hundreds place, the 3 is in the tens place, and 2 is in the ones place.

1 thousand = 1,000
5 hundreds = 500
3 tens = 30
2 ones = 2
1,000 +500 +30 + 2 = 1,532
