Understanding Place Value

How do you figure out the place value of digits in a number?

First, remember this:

• In a three-digit number, the first digit is always in the hundreds place, the middle digit is the tens place, and the last digit is in the ones place.

Example: In the number 532, 5 is in the hundreds place, the 3 is in the tens place, and 2 is in the ones place.

5 hundreds = 500
3 tens = 30
2 ones = 2

500 +30 + 2 = 532
