How do you multiply a fraction by a fraction?

To multiply a fraction by a fraction, multiply the numerators and then the denominators. 

Example: To multiply a fraction by a fraction:

A box is img full of T-shirts. Of that amount, img are red and img are blue. To find the part that is red T-shirts, multiply img by img.

First, multiply the numerators. 1 × 5 = 5
Then, multiply the denominators. 2 × 6 = 12

The red T-shirts fill img of the whole box.

This picture shows that by dividing the box in half, there are 12 parts to the whole box. Five of those parts are red, so img of the whole box are red T-shirts.
