How do you write a mixed number as an improper fraction?

Before adding or subtracting mixed numbers, you first need to write each mixed number as an improper fraction.

Example 1:

To write a mixed number as an improper fraction:

Each bucket is divided into 2 parts, or halves.
Each completely full bucket is image full. In the last bucket, only 1 of the halves is full, or image.

Add the fraction numerators and keep the same denominator.
