You can also write an improper fraction as a mixed number using division.
Example 2: |
To write an improper fraction as a mixed number: |
of the bottle toss tables had bottles knocked down.
To find out how many whole tables this represents, divide the numerator by the denominator.
Think about how many times 22 can be divided by 9. Since 9 divides into 22 two times, place a 2 in the quotient.

Multiply 9 × 2 and enter the product below 22. Then subtract 18 from 22.
Since 4 cannot be divided by 9, 4 is the remainder.
Write the mixed number.
The quotient is the whole number.
The remainder is the numerator.
The denominator stays the same as in the improper fraction.
