How do you round decimals?

Example 1: To round decimals from thousandths
  to tenths place:

Val’s gold ring weighs 1.436 ounces.
Mia’s gold ring weighs 1.468 ounces.

  • First, look at the value of only the first digit to the right of
    the tenths place.

    1.436
    1.468

  • When the digit to the right of the tenths place is less than 5, keep the same tenths place digit and drop the digits to the right of the tenths place. When the digit to the right of the tenths place is greater than or equal to 5 , round the tenths place digit up and drop the digits to the right of the tenths place.
  • Since the digit to the right of the tenths place in 1.436 is a 3, keep the same tenths place digit and drop the 36 after the tenths place.

    1.436 rounds to 1.4
On the number line, 1.436 is closer to 1.4 than 1.5

  • Since the digit to the right of the tenths place in 1.468 is greater than or equal to 5, round the tenths place digit up and drop the 68.

    1.468 rounds to 1.5
On the number line, 1.568 is closer to 1.5 than 1.4
