Understanding Fractions

How do you compare fractions?

To tell whether the value of a fraction is greater than or less than another, you can compare the numerators and denominators, make models, or make number lines.

Example 1: To compare the fractions when the denominators
  are the same:
numerator
denominator
  • Notice that both whole cakes were divided into the same total number of equal-sized pieces. The denominators tell that each whole cake had 4 equal-sized pieces. Each piece is a fourth.

  • Remember, when the denominators are the same, you can compare the fractions by looking at their numerators.

Since all of the fourths are the same size, 3 of the fourths is greater than 1 of the fourths.

of a cake is greater than of a cake.

The less than < and the greater than > symbols are used to compare fractions.
