Example 2: To write a fraction with numbers to describe how much
	of the flag is blue:

• Write the total number of equal-sized flag parts below the fraction bar. The flag has 4 equal-sized parts, so write the number 4 below the fraction bar.

  	denominator (total parts in the whole)

• Write the number of blue parts in the flag above the fraction bar. The flag has 1 blue part, so write the number 1 above the fraction bar.

	numerator (blue parts in the whole)
	denominator (total parts in the whole)

The fraction describes how much of the flag is blue, because 1 of the 4 total parts is blue.

A fraction of a group or set can also be described using words or numbers.

Example 3:	To write a fraction with words and numbers to describe
	how much of the group is red:

                    

• Count the total cars in the group.
  There are 5 cars in the group.
  Each car is a fifth of the whole group.

• Count the cars in the group that are red.
  2 of the 5 cars in the group are red.

The fraction two-fifths describes how much of the group is red.
