Here are two examples of division problems. Use the pictures to help you understand the problem.

Example 1: A coach wishes to divide 8 balls evenly between
two teams.

8 balls ÷ 2 teams = 4 balls for each team

8 can be divided by 2 four times
           or you could say
2 divides into 8 four times.

 

Example 2: A company that makes balls wants to divide
56 balls evenly between 7 boxes.

56 balls ÷ 7 boxes = 8 balls in each box

56 can be divided by 7 eight times
               or you could say
     7 divides into 56 eight times.
