Example 2:

You want to find how many will be in each group when 248 is divided into 5 groups.

First set up the problem like this:

Ask yourself how many times 5 can divide into the first number in the dividend. Since 5 is greater than 2, look instead at the first two digits of the dividend. 5 divides into 24 at least four times, so write a 4 over the 4 in the ten’s place.

Now multiply 4 by 5. 4 × 5 = 20, so write the 20 under the 24.

Now subtract 20 from 24. 24 – 20 = 4, so write the 4 under the 0 in the ten’s place.

Now bring down the 8 to make 48.

Now divide 48 by 5. 5 divides into 48 at least nine times, so write a 9 over the 8 in the one’s place.

Now multiply 9 by 5. 9 × 5 = 45, so write 45 under the 48 and subtract.

You have a remainder of 3, because when 5 is divided into 3, it does not make a whole number. Now write the remainder (r) next to the 49.
