Understanding Division

Why use division?

Division is used for figuring out how many groups of the same size there are in a set or collection of objects. Division is also useful for finding out how many objects are in each group when a set is divided.

Here is an example of when you might use division:

There are 21 students in your class. Your teacher wants to create
4 groups of students. To figure out how many students would be in each group, you need to divide.

21 students ÷ 4 groups = 5 students in each group, with
1 student remaining

This means that when 21 is divided into 4 groups, there are
five students in each group
with a remainder of 1 student.
                                        or
4 divides into 21 five times with a remainder of 1.

Vocabulary
