Example 2:

You want to find how many will be in each group when
130 is divided into 5 groups.

First set up the problem like this:

Ask yourself how many times 5 can divide into the first digit in the dividend. Since 5 is greater than 1, look instead at the first two digits of the dividend. 5 divides into 13 at least two times, so write a 2 over the 3 in the ten’s place.

Now multiply 2 by 5. 2 × 5 = 10, so write the 10 under the 13.

Now subtract 10 from 13. 13 – 10 = 3, so write the 3 under the 0 in the ten’s place.

Now bring down the 0 to make 30.

Now divide 30 by 5. 30 ÷ 5 = 6, so write a 6 over the 0 in the one’s place.

Now multiply 6 by 5. 6 × 5 = 30, so write 30 under the 30 and subtract.
