Why use multiplication?
Multiplication
is used for adding
numbers quickly. For example, instead of adding the number 3
seven times:
3 + 3
+ 3 + 3
+ 3 + 3
+ 3 = 21
You can multiply 3 by 7
to get the same answer:
3 × 7
= 21
Remember these facts when multiplying numbers:
- When multiplying any number by 0, the product
is always 0.
- It doesn’t matter in which order you multiply the numbers.
The product is always the same. This is called the
Commutative Property.
