Understanding Multiplication

Why use multiplication?

Multiplication is used for adding numbers quickly. For example, instead of adding 132 ten times:

132 + 132 + 132 + 132 + 132 + 132 + 132 + 132 + 132 + 132 = 1,320

You can multiply 132 by 10 to get the same answer:

132 × 10 = 1,320

Remember these facts when multiplying numbers:

  • When multiplying any number by 0, the product is always 0.
  • It doesn’t matter in which order you multiply the numbers. The product is always the same. This is called the Cummutative Property.
  • It doesn’t matter how the numbers are grouped when you multiply them. The product is always the same. This is called the Associative Property.
